Fruity Friday: Apples

Fruity Friday  The Apple

When someone mentions the word Apple it's likely these days that iPhone or Mac comes to mind, but the Apple we are featuring today is the kind that grows on trees! From Granny Smith to Pink Lady to Golden Delicious the humble apple truly is one of nature's super fruits.

An Apple a Day Keeps The Doctor Away. Remember that old saying - well it's true! Apples are "Nature's Toothbrush" they help clean teeth and massage gums! They make the perfect healthy afternoon or mid morning snack. Apples are high in fibre which makes you feel full, assisting with weight loss! Eating an apple a day can also help you reduce cholesterol levels - that's music to our ears! Research also indicates Apples can reduce the risk of colon, prostate and lung cancer. Apples are made up of 75% water! Did you know - fresh apples even float when submerged in water, because 25% of their volume is air.

Adam and Eve... and that Apple!
The word Apple comes from the Old English word "aeppel". In Greek mythology the apple is a symbol of love and beauty. The apple is known as the forbidden fruit in many religions including Christianity.  Remember Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden? Christian tradition features a red apple known as the forbidden fruit that Eve steals from the Garden of Eden and later convinces Adam to eat it. The latin word for apple (mālum) and evil (mălum) are very similar which may have influenced the bible referring to the apple as the Forbidden Fruit

Apple Jack anyone?
There are over 10,000 different varieties of apples, with Red Delicious being one of the most popular. Apples grow on small trees which blossom in the Spring and bear fruit in Autumn/Fall. They are a member of the rose family of plants. You may already know that sliced apples turn brown when exposed to oxygen. But to prevent this, place the slices in a pan of cold water with a pinch of salt. For salads, dip them slices in fresh lemon juice to prevent slices from turning brown.

Apples are also used to make juice, cider, martinis and Apple Jack. They have always been a very popular ingredient in desserts such as apple pies, crumbles, stewed apples, cake and even muffins. Coated in hot toffee that is allowed to cool creates a delicious candy treat known as the Toffee Apple. Yum! Popular variations include Candy Apples and Caramel Apples.

As American As Apple Pie. America is the second leading producer of apples after China, so it's no wonder the Apple has become much more than just a fruit. Even New York city is known as The Big Apple. Plus we can't forget the world's most valuable brand, Apple Inc. It's also part of the American movie culture including many fables and fairy tales. A red apple is featured on the cover of the Twilight book representing the forbidden fruit. Author Stephenie Meyer says she loved the phrase "the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil"
In Disney's fairytale of Snow White, a wicked Queen tricks Snow White into taking a bite of a poisoned apple which sends her into a magical sleep. A deep sleep that only the power of love's first kiss can cure...

It seems that Eve, that evil Queen and Steve Jobs aren't the only ones who know the power of the Apple. Donna Karan created the Be Delicious range of fragrances for DKNY, with the apple as the symbol of her fragrance campaign. The Be Delicious perfume features a sleek metal and glass bottle in the shape of an apple. Inspired by New York city, this juicy fragrance features notes of American apple, cucumber, grapefruit, sandalwood and white amber.

A is for Apple. Whether your enjoying it as a healthy snack or indulging in a slice of your favourite apple pie, apples are just incredible! Hopefully you are now inspired to include an apple into your daily diet.

Alicia Silverstone: living the kind life

Alicia Silverstone
ECO ANGEL November 2011

Our November Eco Angel is actress, vegan and author of The Kind Diet Alicia Silverstone. You may know her as Cher from Clueless or Batgirl from Batman & Robin, but Alicia is much more than just an actress. She is a mother, wife, brand ambassador, animal-advocate, best selling author, and Vegan.

PETA crowned Alicia their 2004 "Sexiest Female Vegetarian" and in 2007 Alicia appeared nude in a PETA print ad and commercial promoting vegetarianism for GoVeg.com.

"I'm Vegan for political, moral reasons, thinking that I was making this great sacrifice, but it was absolutely necessary; I was not going to contribute to the violence in the world anymore. Nothing`s changed my life more. I feel better about myself as a person, being conscious and responsible for my actions and I lost weight and my skin cleared up and I got bright eyes and I just became stronger and healthier and happier. Can`t think of anything better in the world to be but be vegan." ~ Alicia Silverstone

Two years later in 2009 she released her first book The Kind Diet, a vegan nutrition guide and recipe book. Alicia also created an online companion for her New York Time Best Selling book called The Kind Life at TheKindLife.com. "This website is a fantastic resource for those who want to delve deeper into the world of healthy, green, eco friendly living." Alicia's website The Kind Life is much more than just a celebrity blog, it's an online community where she shares her recipes, health and beauty information and eco-friendly home ideas. It's one of our all time favourite eco blogs!

The Kind Diet - a simple guide to feeling great, losing weight and saving the planet

Alicia shares her approach to living a kinder life by embracing a plant-based diet in her book The Kind Diet. This simple guide is full of nutritional information and is perfect for those wanting to embrace a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. The Kind Diet features over 100 of Alicia's favourite recipes, research & facts about nutrition, food substitutions and meal planning tips. She reveals the facts about the Nasty Foods like meat, dairy, white sugar, processed foods and teaches you to embrace the Kind Foods like whole gains, beans, fruits and vegetables. Alicia is not suggesting you become a vegan overnight, but her book introduces you to delicious healthy food alternatives and information that can assist your transition to becoming a vegetarian. We highly recommend The Kind Diet for anyone who is ready to make a change in their diet for a healthier earth-friendly life!

Alicia has now joined forces with Earth-Friendly Beauty company EcoTools to design & create Eco Tools by Alicia Silverstone; a new range of eco-friendly brushes and accessories. One of our favourites is Alicia's 5 Piece Brush Set (pictured below). This eco set features 4 exclusive EcoTools brushes designed by Alicia including her favourite the Finishing Brush, she says "I use this with my mineral face makeup and loose powders. The feathery, light touch is soft on my face and gives me a flawless finish."  The collection also includes a blush brush, angled eye shadow brush, lash & brow groomer and floral cosmetic bag designed by Alicia.

Alicia's EcoTools brushes are kind, of course, featuring cruelty-free bristles and bamboo brush handles. These are in our opinion the best eco-friendly vegan beauty tools!
Alicia: "All materials used in my EcoTools collection are earth-friendly, and include tree-free paper, a natural hemp blend, recycled plastic lining, as well as non-toxic inks. The brushes are made with recycled aluminium, bamboo, and synthetic bristles."

"Everything you do in the name of the environment not only saves your health, it saves your soul."  ~ Alicia Silverstone

So it turns out that Alicia Silverstone is far from Clueless when it comes to eco living, with her glitzy hollywood glamour days behind her, Alicia truly embraces a down to earth, eco-friendly kind life.  Although Alicia is still acting - starring in three movies in 2011, she has always remained mostly out of the media spotlight. Alicia prefers to live a simple, kind earth-friendly life with her husband, new baby boy Bear (born May 5, 2011) and rescue dogs. Even her home in Los Angeles is eco-friendly with solar panels and an organic vegetable garden. Alicia Silverstone truly is living the kind life.
